United Nations Special Coordinator Ms. Sigrid Kaag welcomed the launch of the municipal elections in Lebanon today.

During a tour of several polling centres in Beirut, Ms. Kaag noted “I am glad to see Lebanese voting this morning".

The Special Coordinator commended the successful preparation and organization by the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities, and the provision of security by the Lebanese Armed Forces and other security forces. The Special Coordinator expressed her hope that the municipal elections would be a stepping stone towards national elections, scheduled to take place next year. She also reiterated the importance of having women included on the ballot papers.

The United Nations have provided technical support and advise to the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities for the preparations of this electoral process.

المنسق الخاص للأمم المتحدة في لبنان سيغريد كاغ ترحب بإنطلاق الانتخابات البلدية في لبنان

رحبت المنسق الخاص للأمم المتحدة في لبنان السيدة سيغريد كاغ بإنطلاق عملية الانتخابات البلدية في لبنان اليوم. وقالت خلال جولة لها على بعض المراكز الانتخابية في بيروت: "إنني مسرورة برؤية اللبنانيين يصوتون هذا الصباح."

وأشادت المنسق الخاص بالتنظيم والتحضيرات الناجحة التي قامت بها وزارة الداخلية والبلديات وبالترتيبات الأمنية للقوات المسلحة اللبنانية والقوى الامنية. وعبَرت المنسق الخاص عن تمنياتها أن تكون الانتخابات البلدية خطوة في إتجاه الانتخابات النيابية المقررعقدها العام المقبل. كما كررت أهمية ترشيح النساء ضمن القوائم الانتخابية.

قدمت الأمم المتحدة الدعم التقني والمشورة إلى وزارة الداخلية والبلديات للتحضيرات لهذه العملية الانتخابية.
