Secretary-General's press encounter - on the situation in the Middle East
One year since near-daily exchanges of fire commenced across the Blue Line, initiated by Hizbullah propelling rockets into Shab‘a Farms, in violation of the cessation of hostilities and Security Council resolution 1701 (2006).
Madame President, Excellencies,
The raging fires in the Middle East are fast becoming an inferno.
The Secretary-General is extremely concerned with the escalation of the conflict in Lebanon.
He appeals for an immediate ceasefire. An all-out war must be avoided in Lebanon at all costs, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon must be respected.
Beirut, Lebanon
1 October 2024
I condemn the broadening of the Middle East conflict, with escalation after escalation.
This must stop. We absolutely need a ceasefire.
The Secretary-General is gravely concerned by the dramatic escalation of events in Beirut in the last 24 hours.
Madam President, Excellencies,
Hell is breaking loose in Lebanon.
As I told the General Assembly yesterday, we should all be alarmed by the escalation.
Lebanon is at the brink.
Of course, the Blue Line has seen tensions for years.
