Statement of the International Support Group for Lebanon
Beirut, 21 January 2020
On Monday, the Secretary-General made a passionate appeal for peace. His message to world leaders was simple:
Exercise maximum restraint.
Renew international cooperation.
The Secretary-General has consistently advocated for de-escalation in the Gulf. He is deeply concerned with the recent escalation.
This is a moment in which leaders must exercise maximum restraint. The world cannot afford another war in the Gulf.
The Security Council received a briefing from the UN Special Coordinator Jan Kubis and Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiare. They briefed the Council on the situation in Lebanon and this was part of the regular meeting on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006).
Following some misleading media reports, the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL) would like to reconfirm its position concerning the government formation.
His Excellency President Michel Aoun received today at Baabda the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Mr. Ján Kubiš together with the Ambassadors, representing the members of the International Support Group for Lebanon (ISG).
