The Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, deplores today’s attack across Lebanon which left thousands injured, many critically, and is confirmed to have killed at least nine, including children. In accordance with international humanitarian law, she reminds all concerned actors that civilians are not a target and must be protected at all times. Even one civilian casualty is one too many.

The developments today mark an extremely concerning escalation in what is an already unacceptably volatile context. While the full impact of the attack is still unfolding, Hennis-Plasschaert urges all concerned actors to refrain from any further action, or bellicose rhetoric, which could trigger a wider conflagration that nobody can afford.

The Special Coordinator underlines the urgency of restoring calm and calls on all concerned actors to prioritize stability as paramount. Too much is at stake to do anything less.

بيان للمنسّقة الخاصّة للأمم المتحدة جينين هينيس-بلاسخارت بشأن الاعتداء في لبنان

تعرب المنسّقة الخاصّة للأمم المتحدة في لبنان، جينين هينيس-بلاسخارت، عن أسفها للهجوم الذي طال اليوم أنحاء متعددة من لبنان، والذي أسفر عن إصابة آلاف الأشخاص، العديد منهم جراحهم خطيرة، فضلا عن فقدان أرواح ما لا يقل عن تسعة أشخاص، بينهم أطفال. وتُذكّر المنسقة الخاصة جميع الأطراف المعنية بأنّه وفقا للقانون الدولي الإنساني فإن المدنيين لا ينبغي أن يكونوا هدفا ويجب حمايتهم في جميع الأوقات. فلا شك أن سقوط ضحية مدنية واحدة هو أمر غير مقبول.

تشكل أحداث اليوم تصعيدا مقلقا للغاية في ظلّ سياق قابل للاشتعال بشكل غير مقبول. وبينما لا يزال تأثير الهجوم يتكشف، تحثّ هينيس-بلاسخارت جميع الأطراف المعنيّة على الامتناع عن أيّ تصعيد إضافي او خطابات عدائية قد تؤدي إلى نشوب نزاعٍ أوسع لا يستطيع أي طرف تحملّه.

كما وتُشدّد المنسّقة الخاصّة على ضرورة استعادة الهدوء بشكل عاجل، وتدعو جميع الأطراف المعنية إلى جعل الاستقرار أولوية قصوى. فالمخاطر ستكون كبيرة للغاية في حال لم يتمّ التحرّك بهذا الاتجاه.
