Joint statement of UN Special Coordinator and EU Representative after Meeting Speaker Berri

Both the EU and the UN have consistently underlined the importance of the electoral process in Lebanon and have worked substantively to support it in a variety of ways since 2005.

During our meeting, we expressed appreciation for all of the efforts which have been made to achieve agreement on the electoral law.

We informed Speaker Berri of our continued strong support for the early conduct of elections in accordance with constitutional requirements and in line with international standards, and our hope that a way forward which ensures this will be agreed.

We stress again the importance of elections for stability and confidence in the country, and for overcoming the pressing challenges Lebanon faces today.
