United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Derek Plumbly, and his Deputy, Ross Mountain, met today with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati. The discussions covered the latest developments in Lebanon and the region, including the social and economic impacts of the Syrian conflict on Lebanon and the humanitarian response
Mr. Plumbly took the opportunity to introduce Mr. Mountain who arrived in Beirut on Monday to take up a new temporary position as Deputy Special Coordinator for Lebanon, UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Lebanon ad interim following the departure of Mr. Robert Watkins.
Mr. Mountain returns to Lebanon after previously serving as United Nations Resident Coordinator in Lebanon from 1995 to 1998. In a formidable career as a United Nations official, he has served in missions in Asia and the Pacific, the Americas, Africa and the Middle East. In particular, he served in the role of Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator as an Assistant Secretary-General in Haiti, Iraq and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
