I had a very good meeting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. Our discussions focused on the situation in Lebanon and regional developments. I welcomed the recent efforts, including those of Speaker Berri, to push for dialogue between political parties in Lebanon.
The Speaker and I agreed that dialogue is necessary for strengthening Lebanon’s security, stability and coexistence and for moving forward on outstanding constitutional steps.
We also discussed the ongoing efforts to agree on a parliamentary electoral law and I expressed the UN’s readiness to continue sharing best practices and provide technical support to those organizing the elections. I, of course, also voiced the UN’s concern over the prolonged vacancy in the presidency and hoped that the election of a new president would take place without further delay.
We also discussed the security situation in Lebanon. I voiced, as I did yesterday, our condemnation of the attacks on the army and our solidarity with it.
Thank you.
