Statement of UN Special Coordinator Derek Plumbly after meeting Prime Minister Tamam Salam

I just had a good meeting with Prime Minister Tamam Salam. We discussed the latest developments particularly those related to security. I welcomed the calm that has been restored in the border town of Arsal and hailed the efforts of the government and the Lebanese army and security forces in achieving that.

I assured the Prime Minister of the United Nations strong commitment to supporting Lebanese institutions, including the armed and security forces. We discussed the assistance that is needed by Lebanon and the efforts of the International Support Group. I warmly welcomed the generous grant of $1 billion from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to support Lebanon’s counter terrorism efforts.

Politically, I again stressed the importance for Lebanon’s partners of all Lebanese political parties working together to ensure that government and parliament can act effectively and above all that a President is elected without further delay.
