The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Mr. Derek Plumbly today visited Nabatieh.
Mr. Plumbly met with the Governor, the Mayor, the Head of the Union of Municipalities and with municipality members. He discussed situation in the south and the needs of its population. The Special Coordinator expressed appreciation for the role of local institutions and security forces in maintaining stability and working to develop the area.
During the course of his visit, Mr. Plumbly viewed work in hand on the construction of a new market in Nabatieh supported by the Lebanese Recovery Fund, the Municipality of Nabatieh, the Ministry of Agriculture and UNDP. He was also briefed by UNHCR staff on the assistance provided to Syrian refugees in the Nabatieh district and discussed with them and community leaders upcoming needs, as well as assistance presently provided to Lebanese host communities there. He expressed appreciation for the reception accorded locally to the refugees, and noted that the plan on which UN agencies and the government were presently working would focus heavily on the needs of host communities and local institutions.
The Special Coordinator visited the Antonine School and attended the school’s Independence Day celebration with the staff and students there. He later viewed the restoration work undertaken at Beaufort Castle which was initiated by the Ministry of Culture with support from the Kuwaiti Development Fund. MP Yassine Jaber subsequently hosted a lunch in his honor which was attended by other local parliamentarians, civic figures and UN staff.
