United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly today met a delegation from the Civil Campaign for Electoral Reform (CCER) at the UN House in Beirut.
Mr Plumbly welcomed the resumption last week of consultations in Parliament on a new electoral law and stressed the need for agreement in good time to pave the way for parliamentary elections in line with Lebanon’s long tradition of democratic practice.
The CCER delegation briefed the UN Special Coordinator on its campaign to encourage agreement on a new electoral law which should include reforms in line with international standards, and to ensure timely conduct of elections. In turn, Mr. Plumbly commended the role played by civil society in Lebanon in pressing for elections and electoral reform.
