The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Derek Plumbly, strongly condemned today's suicide car bombing at an army checkpoint at the entrance of Hermel in north-eastern Lebanon that led to the death of two members of the Lebanese Armed Forces and reportedly other casualties too. He extended his condolences to the Lebanese army and to the families of the victims of this bombing.
The Special Coordinator said the tireless efforts and sacrifice of the Lebanese army and the security forces to detain terrorist suspects and prevent such attacks were worthy of the highest praise. He said the recurrence of acts of terrorism should only strengthen the support of all Lebanese for the institutions of the State, particularly the army and the security forces, as they work to safeguard Lebanon's security and stability. The Special Coordinator reiterated the UN's support for Lebanon and its army during these difficult times and hoped that all those responsible for today's bombing and all other acts of terrorism will be brought to justice as soon as possible.
