Thursday, 30 October 2014
The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Derek Plumbly, today attended the first working group meeting of the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee (LPDC), which was agreed by Prime Minister Tamam Salam, at the Grand Serail in Beirut.
He welcomed the LPDC’s initiative in holding the meeting, which aimed to strengthen Lebanon’s capacities in managing the Palestinian refugee file in Lebanon and in responding to the needs of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.
The Special Coordinator praised the determination of Prime Minister Salam and LPDC Chairman Dr. Hassan Mneimneh to press ahead with a new strategy for the Committee, noting both long-standing issues that needed to be addressed and the new challenges facing both Lebanese and Palestinians in Lebanon arising from the conflict in Syria. He and other UN officials present, in particular UNRWA, spoke of existing areas of cooperation and support.
The Special Coordinator welcomed the recent donation by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the reconstruction of Nahr El-Bared camp and encouraged additional assistance from other donors.
