As Lebanon marks four years since the devastating Beirut Port explosion, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert met with families of some of the victims.

The families shared their stories of this unprecedented tragedy that decimated lives, families and homes. They recounted their pursuit of truth, justice, and accountability, so far in vain, over the past four years. With the investigation into the explosion at a standstill, they and so many others have been left wanting for justice to be rendered. 

“The tragedy of the Beirut Port explosion reverberated throughout the world. For me to hear testimonies of the families and bear witness to this painful anniversary is deeply moving,” Hennis-Plasschaert said.

“It is also agonizing to see them re-victimized by the failure, thus far, to deliver justice,” she added. “Frankly, the complete lack of accountability for such a manmade disaster is staggering. One would expect the concerned authorities to work tirelessly to lift all barriers - structural or political - but the opposite is happening.” 

Within this context, the Special Coordinator reiterated the call of the UN Secretary-General for an impartial, thorough, and transparent investigation to deliver truth, justice, and accountability. She also underlined the importance of an independent and well-functioning judiciary in Lebanon alongside other empowered and effective State institutions.

ذكرى انفجار مرفأ بيروت 4 آب/أغسطس 2020

في الذكرى السنوية الرابعة لانفجار مرفأ بيروت المُدمّر، التقت المنسّقة الخاصّة للأمم المتحدة في لبنان السيدة جينين هينيس-بلاسخارت عائلات بعض الضحايا واستمعت لذكرياتهم عن هذه الكارثة غير المسبوقة التي أودت بحياة العديد من الأشخاص وشردت عائلات ودمرت منازل.

ونوهت أسر الضحايا الى أن سعيها الحثيث لكشف الحقيقة وانفاذ العدالة والمحاسبة لم يثمر بعد بالرغم من مضيّ أربع سنوات، فمع استمرار التحقيق في الانفجار عالقا، لا تزال تلك العائلات وغيرها تتطلّع إلى تحقيق العدالة.

من ناحيتها ذكرت السيدة هينيس-بلاسخارت: "أن انفجار مرفأ بيروت كانت له أصداء في جميع أنحاء العالم. وأن أستمع اليوم إلى شهادات العائلات لإحياء هذه الذكرى المؤلمة لهو أمر مؤثر للغاية بالنسبة لي".

وأضافت أن رؤية هذه العائلات تتعرّض للظلم مراراً وتكراراً بسبب الفشل في تحقيق العدالة حتى الآن مؤلم. "فالغياب التام للمحاسبة عن كارثة من صنع الانسان كهذا الانفجار يعد أمرا مذهلا.  فالمتوقع من السلطات المعنية أن تعمل بلا كلل لإزالة جميع العوائق أمام التحقيق - سواء كانت هيكلية أو سياسية - ولكن ما يحدث هو العكس تماماً."

وفي هذا السياق، أعادت المنسّقة الخاصّة التأكيد على دعوة الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة لإجراء تحقيقٍ محايدٍ وشاملٍ وشفّاف لكشف الحقيقة وتحقيق العدالة والمحاسبة. كما أكّدت على أهمية وجود قضاء مستقل وناجز في لبنان جنبًا إلى جنب مع تفعيل وتمكين مؤسسات الدولة الأخرى.
