United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly today visited a center run by Amel Association in the area of Haret Hreik, which has been extending assistance to Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

Mr. Plumbly met with the President of Amel, Dr. Kamel Mehanna, who briefed the Special Coordinator on the work of the association and the challenges that Amel and other Lebanese NGOs face, particularly with regards to assistance to the Syrian refugees.

“I am impressed by the humanitarian efforts of Amel and other Lebanese NGOs who have dedicated much of their time and resources to assisting the Syrian refugees in this time of dire need,” Mr. Plumbly said after meeting with some refugee families. The Special Coordinator praised the communities from all across Lebanon who have played a generous role in helping meet the needs of the refugees and said the United Nations was looking for what more it could do to help those helping the refugees.

Mr. Plumbly welcomed the ongoing cooperation between the United Nations, led by UNHCR, the Lebanese Government and local and international NGOs who are all working to meet the needs of the refugees.
