S/2014/860

Letter dated 25 November 2014 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council

I have the honour to refer to paragraph 34 of the report of the SecretaryGeneral to the Security Council dated 20 July 2000 (S/2000/718), expressing the intention to appoint a senior official to be based in Beirut to help coordinate United Nations activities in regard to Lebanon. Following the usual consultations, I wish to inform the Security Council of my intention to appoint Sigrid Kaag (Netherlands) as the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, succeeding Derek Plumbly. Ms. Kaag, currently Special Adviser to the Secretary-General, previously served as the Special Coordinator of the Joint Mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the United Nations for the Elimination of the Chemical Weapons Programme of the Syrian Arab Republic. In her capacity as Special Coordinator for Lebanon, she will be my representative in Lebanon responsible for coordinating the work of the United Nations in the country. She will represent me on all political aspects of the work of the United Nations in Lebanon. Among other functions, she will ensure that the activities of the country team are well coordinated with the Government of Lebanon, donors and international financial institutions in line with the objectives of the United Nations. I should be grateful if you would bring the present letter to the attention of the members of the Security Council.

(Signed) BAN Ki-moon
