The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Ms. Sigrid Kaag, visited today Roumieh Prison. 

The Special Coordinator met and discussed with prison authorities as well as adult and juvenile detainees. Following a tour of the prison, SCL Kaag participated in a special therapeutic session led by Ms. Zeinab Daccache, Executive director of the NGO Catharsis. Ms. Kaag was also briefed by a representative from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

During the visit, the Special Coordinator stressed the importance of upholding international human rights standards and ensuring appropriate conditions in the prison. Commending the good cooperation between prison authorities, local NGOs and the UN, the Special Coordinator called for additional support and resources to build the capacity of staff and improve the general conditions in the prison.
