UN Special Coordinator Holds Round of Meetings in Lebanon

UN Special Coordinator Joanna Wronecka held a round of meetings with Lebanese officials and political leaders to stress the importance of safeguarding Lebanon’s security and stability at a time of growing regional uncertainty and continuing skirmishes across the Blue Line in south Lebanon.  With caretaker Minister of Interior Bassam Mawlawi, the Special Coordinator discussed the imperative of an urgent return to the cessation of hostilities across the Blue Line and ensuring Lebanon’s internal security. They also discussed the fate of municipal elections scheduled in May. In separate meetings with MP Gebran Bassil, leader of the Free Patriotic Movement, and leader of the Lebanese Forces party Samir Geagea, the Special Coordinator highlighted the need to end Lebanon’s prolonged presidential vacuum for the stability of state institutions and the country. She also discussed with Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces Gen. Joseph Aoun the importance of adhering to Resolution 1701, the security situation in the country and the LAF’s tireless efforts to provide safety and security. She held similar discussions with the Acting Director of General Security Brig Gen. Elias Baissari.
