Good Morning.


I just had a very good meeting with Prime Minister Tamam Salam.  I congratulated him on the strong vote of confidence the government secured yesterday in Parliament.  The way in which so many have come together in support of the Government is the strongest possible signal of the Lebanese people’s determination to ensure stability and the continuity of state institutions.

I just had a very good meeting with Foreign Minister Bassil. We discussed the situation in Lebanon and the region. I congratulated him on the vote of confidence for the government. We discussed the outcome of the International Support Group meeting in Paris two weeks ago and the preparations that are underway for upcoming meetings in Rome which will be dedicated for support for the Lebanese Army.

I thank Minister Rashid Derbas for receiving me today at the Ministry. I congratulated him on his new and heavy responsibilities. We had a very good meeting. I welcomed the determination of the new Lebanese government, particularly the minister himself, to follow up closely on the issue of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon, their needs and the needs of the Lebanese communities hosting them and the government’s intention to form a joint ministerial committee to oversee the issue and its intention to ensure close cooperation with the United Nations in addressing it.

UN's Plumbly Expresses Concern at Incidents of Violence in Tripoli and Eastern Lebanon

The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Derek Plumbly, today expressed concern at incidents of violence in Tripoli, north Lebanon and in areas of eastern Lebanon during the past few days, which have led to tragic loss of life, both among civilians and the Lebanese Armed Forces. He also condemned yesterday’s suicide car bombing in the area of Nabi Othman in east Lebanon that killed and wounded a number of people. He extended his condolences to the families of the victims of all these incidents.
