UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Pernille Dahler Kardel met today with Minister of Interior and Municipalities Nohad Machnouk.

They discussed the ongoing preparations for the parliamentary elections in May of this year. Ms. Kardel praised the work being done by the Minister to ensure that elections are held on time and welcomed the allocation by Cabinet last week of a budget for the elections.

“We are looking forward to peaceful and transparent elections in Lebanon in the spring. Elections are essential for the women and men of Lebanon to have a say over the future of their country, and to safeguard the democratic tradition and stability of Lebanon,” Ms. Kardel said.  She said the UN would continue its technical electoral assistance to Lebanon in the run up to the elections.

The Special Coordinator commended the role played by Lebanon’s security forces and army in protecting the country and its population. The Special Coordinator and Minister Machnouk also discussed continued international efforts to help address the challenges to Lebanon’s security and stability. In this regard, they discussed preparations for a conference in support to Lebanon’s security institutions, to be hosted by Italy in the near future.

المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة في لبنان بالإنابة برنيلا دايلر كاردل تلتقي وزير الداخلية والبلديات نهاد المشنوق

إلتقت اليوم المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة في لبنان برنيلا دايلر كاردل وزير الداخلية والبلديات نهاد المشنوق.

تناول البحث التحضيرات الجارية للانتخابات النيابية في أيار المقبل. ونوهت السيدة كاردل بالعمل الذي يقوم به وزير الداخلية لضمان إجراء الانتخابات في موعدها كما رحبت بتخصيص مجلس الوزراء الأسبوع الماضي ميزانية للانتخابات.

وقالت السيدة كاردل: "نحن نتطلع إلى انتخابات هادئة وشفافة في لبنان الربيع المقبل. إن الانتخابات ضرورية حتى يكون لنساء ورجال لبنان رأي بالنسبة لمستقبل بلادهم ولحماية التقاليد الديمقراطية والاستقرار في لبنان." وأضافت أن الامم المتحدة ستستمر في تقديم الدعم التقني للانتخابات خلال الفترة المتبقية حتى موعدها.

كما أشادت المنسقة الخاصة بالدور الذي تلعبه القوى الامنية والجيش في حماية لبنان وشعبه. وناقشت المنسقة الخاصة مع الوزير مشنوق الجهود الدولية المتواصلة من أجل مساعدة لبنان على مواجهة التحديات لأمنه وإستقراره. وفي هذا الاطار، تناول البحث التحضيرات لمؤتمر حول دعم مؤسسات لبنان الامنية التي ستستضيفه إيطاليا في المستقبل القريب.
