On the occasion of the International Day of Peace, acting UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Ms. Pernille Dahler Kardel, today visited Adyan foundation, a non-governmental organization that promotes interreligious dialogue and inclusive citizenship. She met with Adyan Chairman Rev. Fadi Daou, senior Adyan team members and discussed with youth from nine Arab countries who are training with Adyan on peacebuilding and diversity.

“Peace starts with each of us. I am inspired to see young people and local leaders reach out to individuals from different communities. Such efforts are vital to build and sustain peace especially at a time when many countries in the world, particularly in the Middle East, are experiencing violent conflict,” Ms. Kardel said. She praised the convening role played by Adyan in bringing together youth for this important cause.

In her meeting with young women and men, Ms. Kardel listened to their aspirations and the challenges they face, particularly in countries where there is conflict or where peace is fragile. “Peacebuilding is a continuum. Achieving peace and security is linked to promoting development and respecting human rights,” she stressed. Ms. Kardel underlined the special role that Arab youth can play to promote peace and development and to prevent conflict and violent extremism.

Rev. Fadi Daou, Chairman of Adyan said “In our global world and increasingly diverse societies, peace is strongly related to good coexistence between people from different backgrounds. This is why Adyan believes in and works for moving people from mere tolerance to respecting and valuing diversity as source of mutual enrichment. Nonetheless its fragile political situation, we do believe that Lebanon is still carrying this message for the world, and we are glad to share it today from Adyan with HE Ms. Kardel.”

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

بمناسبة اليوم العالمي للسلام، قامت المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة في لبنان بالإنابة، السيدة برنيلا دايلر كاردل، بزيارة اليوم إلى مؤسسة أديان التي تعمل على تعزيز الحوار بين الأديان والمواطنة الشاملة.  التقت رئيس مجلس إدارة المؤسسة الأب فادي ضو وفريق العمل كما شاركت في نقاش مع شباب من تسع دول عربية يشاركون في ورشة عمل تدريبيّة مع أديان على بناء السلام والتنوع.

وقالت السيدة كاردل: "السلام يبدأ مع كل واحد منا. لقد سررت جدا برؤية شباب وجهات فاعلة يتواصلون مع أفراد من مختلف المجتمعات. إن هذه الجهود أساسية لبناء واستدامة السلام وخاصة في وقت تشهد فيه العديد من دول العالم، ولا سيما في الشرق الأوسط، نزاعات عنيفة." وأثنت على الدور الذي تلعبه مؤسسة أديان في جمع الشباب حول هذه القضية الهامة.

وفي اجتماعها مع الشابات والشبان، استمعت السيدة كاردل إلى تطلعاتهم والتحديات التي يواجهونها، لا سيما في البلدان التي يوجد فيها نزاعات أو حيث يكون السلام هشاً. وشددت على أن: "بناء السلام هو سلسلة متواصلة. يرتبط تحقيق السلام والأمن بتعزيز التنمية واحترام حقوق الإنسان." وأكدت السيدة كاردل على الدور الخاص الذي يمكن أن يلعبه الشباب العربي لتعزيز السلام والتنمية ومنع النزاعات والتطرف العنيف."

وقال رئيس مجلس إدارة أديان الأب فادي ضو: " في عالمنا المعولم والمجتمعات التي أصبحت متنوعة بشكل متزايد، يرتبط السلام بقوة بالتعايش الصالح بين الناس من مختلف الخلفيات. ولهذا السبب تؤمن وتعمل أديان على نقل الناس من مجرد التسامح إلى احترام التنوع وتقديره كمصدر للإثراء المتبادل. على الرغم من الوضع السياسي الهش، نعتقد أن لبنان لا يزال يحمل هذه الرسالة للعالم، ونحن سعداء لمشاركة هذه الرسالة اليوم من أديان مع السيدة كاردل."

في 21 أيلول من كل عام، يحتفل في جميع أنحاء العالم باليوم العالمي للسلام. وكانت الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة أعلنت هذا اليوم يوماً مخصصًا لتعزيز المثل العليا للسلام، سواء داخل أو بين جميع الأمم والشعوب.
