From Tripoli and Akkar in north Lebanon to Sidon in the south and Zahleh and Baalbek in the east, Jean Arnault, Officer in Charge of the Special Coordinator for Lebanon, toured various areas of Lebanon this week for a better understanding of the country’s reality and to explore ways the UN can enhance its contributions to its security and stability.
During the week, Mr. Arnault discussed with local authorities the potential to achieve stronger institutions, social cohesion and livelihood opportunities while addressing existing challenges. He visited UN-supported local initiatives and projects that are helping create economic opportunities and increase resilience, and listened to the concerns of displaced Lebanese persons and Syrian refugees. Mr. Arnault praised the efforts of women, men and young people who are building bridges of opportunity and trust above intercommunal tensions and marginalization. He also paid tribute to UN agencies that have continued to provide support to distressed communities under challenging circumstances.
He concluded his tour on Friday with a visit to a Lebanese Armed Forces border regiment where he praised the work LAF is undertaking to secure Lebanon’s eastern. He committed to using UNSCOL’s platforms to continue mobilizing additional international support for the LAF in its efforts to extend state authority across Lebanon.
