I just had a good meeting with Prime Minister Tamam Salam. We discussed the security situation in the country, international efforts to support Lebanon and the latest political developments. I expressed the solidary of the United Nations with the Government, the security forces and the families of the personnel held hostage by violent extremist groups, and our condemnation of their actions.
We of course also discussed the urgent assistance being offered by UN Member States to Lebanon through its security forces in the face of these challenges.
Finally, and after the passage of over 100 days since the vacancy in the presidency, I take this opportunity again to stress the importance of preserving Lebanon’s values of democracy, moderation and pluralism and the institutions of the state which enshrine them. This underscores again the importance of Lebanon’s political parties electing a President without further delay.
