Today, HE the Minister of Defense Samir Mokbel and Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces Major-General Jean Kahwagi hosted United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag on a visit to Arsal in the north-eastern border area of Lebanon.
The visit included a briefing on the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in the area. “I was given the opportunity to see first-hand, from a forward military position, the critical role that the army plays in safeguarding the country’s stability and security. I expressed my admiration for the leadership of the LAF and for all the young men serving on the front lines. They deserve our strongest support”, the Special Coordinator said.
The Special Coordinator also discussed with the Defence Minister and the Army Commander the implementation of the LAF Capabilities Development Plan, and in particular ongoing requirements for international support.
Ms. Kaag’s visit to Arsal precedes the 8 July briefing to the Security Council on the overall situation in Lebanon at this juncture further to Security Council Resolution 1701.
