On her return from Security Council consultations in New York, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag discussed the latest developments in the country and the region with a wide range of Lebanese and international interlocutors in Lebanon.
Her meetings included the Prime Minister Tamam Salam, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, MP Michel Aoun, MP Walid Jumblat, Nader Hariri, Hizbullah officials, as well as the Ambassadors of Egypt, Iran and the United States. She also spoke to Dr. Samir Geagea and the Ambassador of France.
The Special Coordinator relayed the
international community’s continued commitment to preserve stability in
Lebanon. She also conveyed the message of the Security Council that the
prolonged presidential vacancy remains a cause of concern, particularly as it
undermines Lebanon's ability to address the security, economic and social
challenges it faces. She stressed that it is essential that Lebanon’s
institutions are able to function effectively to meet these challenges.
