UN Special Coordinator Pays Tribute to the Lebanese Army on its 70th Anniversary

On the occasion of Lebanon’s army day, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag pays tribute to the Lebanese army and its achievements and sacrifices over the past 70 years.

Mrs. Kaag welcomed the national support for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) which has played a vital role in safeguarding Lebanon’s peace and security on all of its boundaries and across the country, despite many challenges. Noting that the LAF remains a strong symbol of Lebanon’s national unity, the Special Coordinator encouraged continued, decisive international support, particularly through the LAF Capabilities Development Plan.

The Special Coordinator also reiterated the need to overcome political divisions and put Lebanon’s national interest and stability first. In this regard, she expressed again her deep regret over the prolonged vacancy in the presidency, particularly as the President also serves as Higher Chief of the Armed Forces.
