Today the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag visited Shatila Palestine refugee camp. She was briefed by UNRWA officials. Ms Kaag also met with representatives of the Palestinian popular committees, who spoke to her about the challenges of camp life.
The Special Coordinator visited a Palestine refugee family from Syria. Ms. Kaag reaffirmed that the United Nations will continue to encourage greater assistance for the Palestine refugees hosted in Lebanon and supported by UNWRA.
Shatila camp covers an area of 0.4 square kilometers and has grown to host approximately 20,000 – 22,000 persons, of which 12,000 are Palestine refugees, 2,000 are Palestine refugees from Syria and the rest are of various other nationalities.
