Taking note of the June 14 vote in Parliament, the International Support Group (ISG) regrets that Lebanon has yet to elect a president after 12 inconclusive presidential election sessions.

After eight months with neither a president nor a fully functioning government, the ISG is deeply concerned that the current political stalemate is exacerbating the erosion of state institutions and undermining Lebanon’s ability to address the country’s pressing socioeconomic, financial, security and humanitarian challenges.

For the sake of the Lebanese people and the stability of the country, the ISG urges the political leadership and Members of Parliament to assume their responsibilities and prioritize the national interest by electing a new President without further delay.

Any continuation of the unsustainable status quo will only further prolong and complicate Lebanon’s recovery and compound the hardships faced by the people.

The ISG urges the authorities to expedite the adoption and implementation of a comprehensive and inclusive reform agenda to put the country on a path to recovery and sustainable development.

The ISG continues to stand by Lebanon and its people.

The International Support Group has brought together the United Nations and the governments of China, France, Germany, Italy, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States, together with the European Union and the Arab League.  It was launched in September 2013 by the UN Secretary-General with former President Michel Sleiman to help mobilize support and assistance for Lebanon’s stability, sovereignty and state institutions.

إن مجموعة الدعم الدولية من أجل لبنان إذ تأخذ علماً بالتصويت الذي جرى يوم 14 حزيران في البرلمان، فإنها تأسف لعدم انتخاب رئيس للبنان بعد اثنتي عشرة جلسة انتخابية غير حاسمة.

بعد مرور ثمانية أشهر من دون رئيس ومن دون حكومة كاملة الصلاحيات، تعبّر مجموعة الدعم الدولية عن قلقها العميق من أن يؤدي الجمود السياسي الحالي إلى تفاقم تآكل مؤسسات الدولة وتقويض قدرة لبنان على مواجهة التحديات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والمالية والأمنية والإنسانية الملحّة التي يجابهها.

من أجل مصلحة الشعب اللبناني وحرصا على استقرار البلاد، تحثّ مجموعة الدعم الدولية القيادات السياسية وأعضاء البرلمان على تحمل مسؤولياتهم وإعطاء الأولوية للمصلحة الوطنية من خلال انتخاب رئيس جديد دون مزيد من التأخير.

إن أي استمرار للوضع الراهن غير المستدام لن يؤدي إلا إلى إطالة وتعقيد مسيرة تعافي لبنان فضلا عن تفاقم المصاعب التي يواجهها الشعب.

تحثّ مجموعة الدعم الدولية السلطات اللبنانية على المسارعة باعتماد وتنفيذ خطة اصلاحية شاملة لوضع البلاد على مسار التعافي والتنمية المستدامة.

وتؤكد مجموعة الدعم الدولية استمرارها بالوقوف إلى جانب لبنان وشعبه.

Déclaration du Groupe international de soutien au Liban

Le Groupe de soutien international (GIS) prend note du vote du 14 juin au Parlement et regrette que le Liban n’ait encore pu élire un Président de la République, après douze sessions électorales présidentielles infructueuses.

Alors que le Liban n’a plus ni président ni gouvernement de plein exercice depuis huit mois, le GIS exprime sa profonde inquiétude de voir l’impasse politique actuelle exacerber l’érosion des institutions de l’Etat et saper la capacité du Liban à relever les défis socio-économiques, financiers, sécuritaires et humanitaires pressants auxquels il est confronté.

Dans l’intérêt du peuple libanais et de la stabilité du pays, le GIS exhorte les dirigeants politiques et les députés du Parlement à assumer leurs responsabilités et à faire primer l’intérêt national en élisant sans délai un nouveau président.

La poursuite de ce statu quo intenable ne ferait que ralentir et compliquer le redressement du Liban et aggraver les difficultés auxquelles la population fait face.

Le GIS exhorte les autorités à accélérer l’adoption et la mise en œuvre d’un agenda de réformes complet et inclusif, pour mettre le pays sur la voie du redressement et d’un développement durable.

Le GIS continuera de se tenir aux côtés du Liban et des Libanais.
