Today, United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Ms. Joanna Wronecka, visited the city of Tripoli in north Lebanon. She met with local authorities, members of parliament as well as NGOs working to promote reconciliation, capacity-building and opportunities for the youth.

The visit was part of the Special Coordinator’s regular trips to different regions of Lebanon to develop a better understanding of the situation on the ground and the political and socio-economic dynamics as well as to assess how the United Nations and its partners can best support Lebanon and its people.

“There is enormous human and economic potential in Tripoli, despite the high levels of poverty and the very difficult livelihood conditions that have been exacerbated by the country’s recent socio-economic crisis,” the Special Coordinator said during a tour of the city.

Highlighting the importance of functioning state institutions, delivery on urgent reforms and people-oriented policies, the Special Coordinator stressed that “Lebanon’s long-term stability and recovery also depend on supporting and developing the country’s different regions and addressing their needs. It has become crucial to implement genuine reforms to address the social and economic challenges in a sustainable manner.”

The Special Coordinator discussed the situation in Tripoli and the opportunities for progress in meetings with the relevant stakeholders of Tripoli, including the Governor of North Lebanon, religious leaders, parliamentarians and members of the civil society.

The Special Coordinator praised the efforts of different local and non-governmental organizations working on capacity-building, reconciliation and youth empowerment. “The efforts of active non-governmental organizations complement the efforts of the state and the donor community in supporting the country’s sustainable peace and development,” the Special Coordinator said.

The Special Coordinator reiterated the UN's strong commitment to supporting Lebanon’s stability, security, recovery efforts and development.

المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة تزور طرابلس

زارت اليوم المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة في لبنان السيدة يوانا فرونتسكا مدينة طرابلس في شمال لبنان. التقت بالسلطات المحلية وأعضاء في مجلس النواب ومنظمات غير حكومية تعمل على تعزيز تسوية الخلافات وبناء القدرات وإتاحة الفرص للشباب.

كانت الزيارة جزءًا من الرحلات المنتظمة التي تقوم بها المنسقة الخاصة إلى مناطق مختلفة في لبنان لتطوير معرفة أفضل حول الوضع على الأرض والديناميكيات السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية، وكذلك لتقييم كيف يمكن للأمم المتحدة وشركائها تقديم الدعم للبنان وشعبه على أفضل وجه. 

وقالت المنسقة الخاصة خلال جولة في المدينة: "هناك إمكانات بشرية واقتصادية هائلة في طرابلس، على الرغم من ارتفاع مستويات الفقر والظروف المعيشية الصعبة التي تفاقمت بسبب الأزمة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية في البلاد".

وفيما سلطت المنسقة الخاصة الضوء على أهمية عمل مؤسسات الدولة بفاعلية، وتنفيذ الإصلاحات العاجلة والسياسات التي تخدم الناس، شددت على أن "استقرار لبنان وتعافيه على المدى الطويل يعتمدان أيضًا على دعم وتطوير المناطق المختلفة وتلبية احتياجاتها. لقد أصبح من الضروري تنفيذ إصلاحات حقيقية لمواجهة التحديات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية بطريقة مستدامة".

ناقشت المنسقة الخاصة الوضع في طرابلس وفرص إحراز تقدم في اجتماعات مع المعنيين في طرابلس، بما في ذلك محافظ شمال لبنان وقادة روحيين وبرلمانيين وأعضاء من المجتمع المدني.

أشادت المنسقة الخاصة بجهود المنظمات المحلية وغير الحكومية العاملة في مجال بناء القدرات والمصالحة وتمكين الشباب. وقالت المنسقة الخاصة إن "جهود المنظمات غير الحكومية الفاعلة تكمل جهود الدولة والمانحين في دعم السلام والتنمية المستدامة في البلاد".

وأكدت المنسقة الخاصة التزام الأمم المتحدة بدعم استقرار لبنان وأمنه وانمائه وجهوده للتعافي.
