With reference to the article published on 25 July 2018 in Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, entitled : “Kardel to Asharq Al-Awsat: It is Time for a Defense Strategy to Disarm Hizbullah”, the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon clarifyies the following:

The title included by Asharq Al-Awsat does not match the content of the article or the quotes attributed to the UN Special Coordinator. UNSCOL also notes that the Special Coordinator did not make any specific reference in the article to any parties or groups in Lebanon. She  referred to the report of the UN Secretary-General on the implementation of resolution 1701 and to President Michel Aoun’s stated intention to convene a national dialogue to discuss a national defense strategy. She noted as per her briefing to the Security Council, the importance of a national defense strategy that is Lebanese-owned and led, comprehensive and sustainable, which would enable Lebanon to meet its international obligations.  

في إشارة إلى المقال الذي نشر في 25 تموز 2018 في جريدة الشرق الأوسط تحت عنوان: "كارديل لـ«الشرق الأوسط»: حان الوقت لاستراتيجية دفاع تنزع سلاح «حزب الله»، يود مكتب المنسق الخاص للأمم المتحدة توضيح التالي:

العنوان الذي نشر في "الشرق الأوسط" لا يتطابق مع مضمون المقال أو المقتطفات المنسوبة إلى المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة. ويشير المكتب إلى أن المنسقة الخاصة لم تشير في المقالة بشكل محدد إلى أي أطراف أو مجموعات في لبنان. أشارت إلى تقرير الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة حول تطبيق القرار 1701 وإلى عزم الرئيس ميشال عون على عقد حوار وطني لمناقشة استراتيجية وطنية للدفاع. وأشارت، كما فعلت في احاطتها إلى مجلس الامن، إلى أهمية أن تكون الاستراتيجية الوطنية للدفاع ملكاً لبنانياً وبقيادة لبنانية مما يمكن لبنان من الوفاء بالتزاماته الدولية.
