Following the decision by Lebanon’s Interior Ministry to call for legislative elections on 10 May 2025, United Nations Special Coordinator Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert participated in a conference convened by the National Commission for Lebanese Women (NCLW), in partnership with the United Nations in Lebanon and several Member States, to finalize a draft law aimed at enhancing the participation of women in Lebanon’s Parliament. “Now is the time to turn promises into action,” the Special Coordinator stated in her opening remarks. She added that the proposed legislation was not just a technical amendment but a “real opportunity to move the needle on women’s representation in Parliament and to strengthen the role of women in leading and shaping the future of Lebanon”. The draft quota law proposed by the NCLW proposes the allocation of 40 per cent of electoral lists and 33 per cent of seats in the 128-member Parliament for women candidates.
