United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Ms. Joanna Wronecka, warmly welcomed today the handover of letters delineating the maritime boundary between Lebanon and Israel following successful US mediation, under the leadership of Special Presidential Coordinator Amos Hochstein.

“This is a historic achievement at many levels. I hope it will serve as a confidence-building measure that promotes more security and stability in the region and economic benefits for both countries,” said the Special Coordinator who received the signed maritime coordinates from both countries at the UNIFIL premises in Naqoura today.  The Special Coordinator will deposit the documents at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The Special Coordinator commended both Lebanon and Israel for reaching a mutually-agreed solution. She also underlined the particular significance for Lebanon where the political leaders demonstrated their unity towards a common goal. “This is a new chapter for Lebanon that could also create a positive momentum to build consensus around issues of national interest,” the Special Coordinator added.

Since the adoption of the Framework Agreement that launched the negotiation process in 2020, the United Nations has been working with both countries and the United States to put an end to their maritime boundary dispute.

Looking ahead and while all stakeholders should prioritize upholding the commitments outlined in the agreement, the United Nations remains committed to assist the parties to implement it, as requested and within its mandate.

Highlighting the need for sustainable peace and security, the Special Coordinator reiterated the importance of the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 and other relevant resolutions.

بيان للمنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة في لبنان حول تسليم الرسائل المتعلقة بترسيم الحدود البحرية بين لبنان وإسرائيل

رحبت اليوم المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة في لبنان السيدة يوانا فرونتسكا بتسليم الرسائل المتعلقة بترسيم الحدود البحرية بين لبنان وإسرائيل في أعقاب الوساطة الأمريكية الناجحة التي قادها المنسق الرئاسي الخاص آموس هوكستين.

وذكرت المنسقة الخاصة بعد تسلمها الإحداثيات البحرية الموقعة من كلا البلدين في مقر اليونيفيل في الناقورة: "إنه إنجاز تاريخي على مستويات عدة. آمل أن يكون بمثابة خطوة لبناء الثقة من شأنها تعزيز الأمن والاستقرار في المنطقة وتأمين المنافع الاقتصادية لكلا البلدين". وستقوم المنسقة الخاصة بإيداع وثائق الترسيم لدى الأمم المتحدة في نيويورك.

وأثنت المنسقة الخاصة على كل من لبنان وإسرائيل لتوصلهما إلى حل متفق عليه من قبل الطرفين. كما شددت على مغزى هذا الإتفاق بالنسبة للبنان، حيث أظهر القادة السياسيون وحدتهم لبلوغ هدف مشترك. وأضافت: "إن الاتفاق يفتح صفحة جديدة للبنان بما قد يساعد على خلق زخم إيجابي لبناء توافق حول المصلحة الوطنية للبلاد".

منذ تبني الاتفاق الإطاري في عام ٢٠٢٠ الذي أطلق عملية التفاوض حول الترسيم البحري، التزمت الأمم المتحدة بالعمل مع كلا البلدين ومع الولايات المتحدة لوضع حد لنزاعهما على الحدود البحرية.

وتطلعاً للمستقبل وبينما يتعين على كافة الأطراف اعطاء الأولوية لتنفيذ التزاماتهم بموجب هذا الاتفاق، ستظل الأمم المتحدة ملتزمة بمساعدة الأطراف على تطبيقه، حسبما يطلب منها وضمن حدود ولايتها.

وادراكا لأهمية استدامة الأمن والسلم، أعادت المنسقة الخاصة التأكيد على ضرورة تنفيذ قرار مجلس الأمن رقم ١٧٠١ بشكل كامل، والقرارات الأخرى ذات الصلة.
