Arsal, Lebanon
Tuesday, 19 November 2013
The United Nations Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator Robert Watkins today visited the eastern border town of Arsal with UNHCR Representative Ninette Kelley, to examine the conditions of the displaced Syrians in the area and of the Lebanese communities hosting them.
During the visit, Mr. Watkins and Ms. Kelley met with local representatives of Arsal and from the Ministry of Social Affairs in addition to representatives of UN agencies and national and international partner organizations involved in the provision of relief assistance. They listened to the concerns and challenges facing the relief operations in the area as a result of the recent influx of thousands of displaced Syrians who took refuge in the area during the past few days, particularly when it comes to the provision of shelter.
"The United Nations and the international community remain committed to assisting the displaced Syrians and the Lebanese communities hosting them during these very difficult circumstances. The United Nations is coordinating with the Lebanese government and its other partners on the ground to ensure that urgent assistance reaches those in need," Watkins said. At a registration site for refugees in Arsal, Mr. Watkins and Ms. Kelley listened to some newly arrived Syrians tell about their painful stories of displacement to Arsal.
Earlier in the morning, the UN representatives also met with Lebanese security officials in Zahleh.
