Today, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jan Kubis visited the 6th Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) Intervention Regiment and the Central Training Centre for Border Management in Rayak in eastern Lebanon as well as a watchtower of the 3^rd Land Border Regiment and a LAF monitoring post at the eastern border. The visit falls in line with the follow up to the Rome II conference of March 2018 on the strengthening of Lebanese security institutions and the commitment of the international community to supporting the build-up of capacities and capabilities of the LAF and other security institutions.  

On the remarkable progress on consolidation of the LAF deployment along the Eastern border, the Special Coordinator noted that, “with sacrifices and determination, the LAF has been taking important strides in enhancing border control.  LAF achievements were demonstrated to me today by its work in protecting and securing the eastern border, a strong marker of the extension of the Lebanese State authority.” At the 6^th Intervention Regiment outpost in Suweiri, the Special Coordinator commended the tremendous efforts of the Lebanese army in responding to the challenges at the border, including smuggling activities and illegal entries of persons from Syria. While highly acknowledging the humanitarian approach of the LAF in handling cases of people smuggled into Lebanon, the Special Coordinator also noted their professionalism and firmness when dealing with illegal entries to Lebanon. 

In Rayak’s Central Training Centre for Border Management, the Special Coordinator was briefed on the different trainings taking place with a view to strengthening security agencies’ capabilities and enhancing coordination among them in line with the Integrated Border Management Strategy.

Noting the impressive achievements of the LAF so far, the Special Coordinator underlined the importance and need of the continued and increased support both by Lebanon and by its international partners to help Lebanon in further strengthening of its border control and management.

المنسق الخاص للأمم المتحدة في لبنان يان كوبيش يزور أفواج

زار اليوم المنسق الخاص للأمم المتحدة في لبنان يان كوبيش فوج التدخل السادس التابع للجيش اللبناني ومركز التدريب المركزي لإدارة الحدود في رياق، في شرق لبنان، بالإضافة إلى برج مراقبة لفوج الحدود البرية الثالث ومركز مراقبة تابع للجيش على الحدود الشرقية. تأتي الزيارة في إطار المتابعة لمؤتمر روما الثاني الذي عقد في آذار 2018 حول تعزيز المؤسسات الأمنية اللبنانية والتزام المجتمع الدولي بدعم قدرات الجيش اللبناني ومؤسسات أمنية أخرى.

فيما يتعلق بالتقدم الملحوظ في تعزيز انتشار الجيش اللبناني على طول الحدود الشرقية، قال المنسق الخاص: "بالتضحيات والتصميم، قام الجيش اللبناني بخطوات مهمة لتعزيز ضبط الحدود. تبينت لي اليوم إنجازات الجيش اللبناني من خلال العمل الذي يقوم به في حماية وتأمين الحدود الشرقية والذي يشكل علامة قوية لبسط سلطة الدولة اللبنانية." وفي موقع لفوج التدخل السادس في منطقة السويري، أشاد المنسق الخاص بالجهود الهائلة التي يبذلها الجيش اللبناني في مواجهة التحديات على الحدود، بما في ذلك التهريب والدخول الغير شرعي لأفراد من سوريا. وفيما قدر المنسق الخاص المقاربة الإنسانية للجيش اللبناني في التعامل مع حالات تهريب الأشخاص إلى لبنان، أشار أيضاً إلى احترافهم وحزمهم في التعامل مع الدخول الغير شرعي إلى لبنان.

وفي مركز التدريب المركزي لإدارة الحدود في رياق، تم إطلاع المنسق الخاص على التدريبات المختلفة التي تجري بهدف تعزيز قدرات الأجهزة الأمنية والتنسيق فيما بينها بما يتماشى مع الاستراتيجية المتكاملة لإدارة الحدود.

وفي إشارة إلى الانجازات الكبيرة التي حققها الجيش حتى الآن، أكد المنسق الخاص على اهمية والحاجة الى استمرار وزيادة الدعم السخي من قبل لبنان وشركائه الدوليين لمساعدة لبنان في زيادة تعزيز مراقبة وإدارة الحدود.
