United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly today attended a meeting to launch a five-year assistance plan for the Lebanese Armed Forces organized by the Lebanese Army Command (LAF).
The plan, authorized by the Lebanese Government in September last year, identifies $1.6 billion in assistance required for improving LAF capabilities in terms of arms, equipment and operations.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Mr. Derek Plumbly of the United Kingdom as his Special Coordinator for Lebanon. He will succeed Mr. Michael Williams of the United Kingdom who served in Lebanon from August 2008 until September 2011.
The Secretary-General is grateful for Mr. Williams’ service to the United Nations.

The Secretary-General welcomes the return by Israel today of a released prisoner to Lebanon and Hezbollah's release of remains of Israeli soldiers killed during the 2006 war.
He believes these developments are a positive step towards addressing the humanitarian issues that are an important component of Security Council Resolution 1701.
