Special Coordinator for Lebanon Hennis-Plasschaert Holds First Round of Consultations with Lebanese Leadership

Immediately upon arrival in Beirut, newly appointed UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert held her first round of consultations with Lebanon’s top political and security leaders.  With Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and caretaker Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, discussions focused on key priorities under the Special Coordinator's mandate, including the concerning exchanges of fire across the Blue Line and the urgency for the parties to return to the cessation of hostilities and recommit to the implementation of Resolution 1701. Discussions also touched upon the prolonged presidential vacuum, the need for economic and financial reforms and the Syrian refugee crisis. In addition, the Special Coordinator for Lebanon discussed the security situation with the caretaker Minister of Defense, the Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Acting Director of General Security, as well as the economic and financial situation with the caretaker Finance Minister.
