Ahead of International Women’s Day, Ms. Joanna Wronecka, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, accompanied by UN Women representative in Lebanon Gielan Elmessiri, met yesterday in the northern city of Tripoli with youth, women-led groups and non- governmental organizations active in empowering women and girls, peacebuilding efforts and the promotion of social stability through inclusive political dialogue, social inclusion and economic empowerment.

“All across Lebanon, I have met with inspiring women who are playing leading roles in trying to make their communities more peaceful, inclusive, resourceful and involved in contributing to a more sustainable future for their country,” the Special Coordinator said. “Creating a conducive environment for enhancing women and girls’ rights and participation is even more necessary during times of crisis so that Lebanon can benefit from the full potential of all its citizens,” she added. 

The Special Coordinator met with a group of young women and men at the Azm university who shared how Lebanon’s socio-economic crisis was impacting youth in their education and employment opportunities, particularly in Tripoli. They also shared their aspirations for change and for building a better future in all the regions of Lebanon. At the Ruwwad Al-Tanmeya Center, the Special Coordinator was briefed on the peacebuilding efforts, including in offering a space for engaging youth across sectarian divides.

In a separate discussion with local women NGOs funded under the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF), the Special Coordinator, UN Women and the participants highlighted the need to improve the political participation of women and their engagement in matters of peace and security. The Special Coordinator also attended the play “I dream of dreaming” involving Lebanese and Syrian women organized by Seenaryo, Women Now for Development and UN Women as part of a project to empower women in facilitating peaceful dialogue and inclusion in their communities.

Ms. Gielan Almessiri, UN Women representative in Lebanon, that supports the efforts of many of these groups, said, “the courage and commitment of the women and men we met in Tripoli today stands as a beacon of hope towards a more just society that empowers, uplifts, and advocates for every woman's voice to be heard and her rights respected."

The UN remains committed to supporting the inclusion and empowerment of women and girls as part of its overall efforts to support Lebanon’s peace, security and development. 

المنسقة الخاصة فرونتسكا تلتقي بمجموعات نسائية في طرابلس قبيل اليوم الدولي للمرأة

عشية اليوم الدولي للمرأة، التقت المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة في لبنان السيدة يوانا فرونِتسكا، برفقة ممثلة هيئة الأمم المتحدة للمرأة في لبنان السيدة جيلان المسيري، يوم أمس في مدينة طرابلس الشمالية بشباب ومجموعات تقودها نساء ومنظمات غير حكومية ناشطة في تمكين المرأة والفتيات وجهود بناء السلام وتعزيز الاستقرار الاجتماعي من خلال الحوار السياسي الشامل والاندماج الاجتماعي وخدمات الحماية والتمكين الاقتصادي.

وقالت المنسقة الخاصة: "لقد التقيت في جميع أنحاء لبنان بنساء ملهمات يلعبن أدوارًا قيادية في محاولة جعل مجتمعاتهن أكثر سلامًا وشمولاً وبراعةً ومساهمة في مستقبل أكثر استدامة لبلدهن". وأضافت: "إن خلق بيئة مواتية لتعزيز حقوق المرأة والفتيات ومشاركتهن هو أمر ضروري وخاصة خلال أوقات الأزمات لكي يستفيد لبنان من الإمكانات الكاملة لجميع مواطنيه".

التقت المنسقة الخاصة بمجموعة من الشباب والشابات في جامعة العزم الذين تحدثوا عن مدى تأثير الأزمة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية في لبنان على الشباب لناحية فرص التعليم والعمل، وخاصة في طرابلس. كما عبروا عن تطلعاتهم للتغيير وبناء مستقبل أفضل في كافة المناطق اللبنانية. وفي مركز رواد التنمية، اطلعت المنسقة الخاصة على جهود بناء السلام، بما في ذلك توفير مساحة لإشراك الشباب عبر الطوائف.

وفي مناقشة مع منظمات غير حكومية نسائية محلية ممولة من صندوق المرأة للسلام والعمل الإنساني (WPHF)، شدد كل من المنسقة الخاصة وهيئة الأمم المتحدة للمرأة والمشاركون على ضرورة تحسين المشاركة السياسية للمرأة، اضافة الى مشاركتها في مسائل السلام والأمن. كما شاهدت المنسقة الخاصة مسرحية "بحلم إحلم" بمشاركة نساء لبنانيات وسوريات من تنظيم سيناريو ومنظمة "النساء الآن لأجل التنمية" وهيئة الأمم المتحدة للمرأة كجزء من مشروع لتمكين المرأة في تسهيل الحوار السلمي وشمول الجميع في مجتمعاتهن.

وقالت السيدة جيلان المسيري، ممثلة هيئة الأمم المتحدة للمرأة في لبنان التي تدعم جهود العديد من هذه المجموعات، "إن شجاعة والتزام النساء والرجال الذين التقينا بهم في طرابلس اليوم يمثلان منارة أمل نحو مجتمع أكثر عدلاً يمكّن ويرفع ويدعو إلى سماع صوت كل امرأة وإلى احترام حقوقها."

وتؤكد الأمم المتحدة التزامها بدعم شمول وتمكين النساء والفتيات كجزء من جهودها الشاملة لدعم السلام والأمن والتنمية في لبنان.
