Ms. Joanna Wronecka, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, today held her first round of meetings with Lebanese officials. She met with President Michel Aoun, Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri, caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab and Acting Caretaker Foreign Minister Zeina Akar.

Ms. Wronecka, who arrived in Beirut on Tuesday, discussed with Lebanon’s leaders the key areas of cooperation between Lebanon and the UN, focused on Lebanon’s priority needs, including at the political, security, humanitarian and development levels, and the latest developments in Lebanon.

Noting the urgent need for solutions to Lebanon’s accumulating crises, the UN Special Coordinator underlined that solutions require functioning state institutions, including a fully empowered reform-oriented government.

“Lebanon is in crisis at different levels and unfortunately the Lebanese people are struggling more and more each day. Solutions are urgently needed. And they are available. Lebanon is a country of huge promise and potential, which I am confident the country can build on to recover and build back a better future,” Ms. Wronecka said.

Recalling the decades-long partnership between Lebanon and the United Nations, Ms. Wronecka reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting Lebanon and its people, its peace, security, stability and socio-economic development.

She also took the opportunity to thank Deputy Special Coordinator and UN Resident Coordinator Najat Rochdi for her tireless leadership of the UN’s work in Lebanon during the past months.

المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة يوانّا فرونِتسكا تلتقي المسؤولين اللبنانيين

عقدت المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة في لبنان السيدة يوانّا فرونِتسكا جولة أولى من اللقاءات مع المسؤولين اللبنانيين. والتقت برئيس الجمهورية ميشال عون، رئيس مجلس النواب نبيه بري، رئيس حكومة تصريف الأعمال حسان دياب ووزيرة الخارجية بالإنابة في حكومة تصريف الأعمال زينة عكر.

السيدة فرونِتسكا، التي وصلت إلى بيروت يوم الثلاثاء، ناقشت مع القادة اللبنانيين مجالات التعاون الرئيسية بين لبنان والأمم المتحدة المرتكزة على احتياجات لبنان ذات الأولوية، وذلك على المستويات السياسية والأمنية والإنسانية والإنمائية، كما وتطرقت إلى آخر التطورات في لبنان.

وفي إشارة إلى الحاجة الملحة لإيجاد حلول للأزمات المتراكمة في لبنان، شددت المنسقة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة على أن الحلول تتطلب وجود مؤسسات دولة فاعلة، بما في ذلك حكومة متمكنة وذات توجه إصلاحي.

وقالت السيدة فرونِتسكا أن "لبنان في أزمة على مستويات مختلفة والشعب اللبناني يعاني للأسف أكثر فأكثر كل يوم. هناك حاجة ماسة للحلول وهي متاحة. لبنان بلد ذو وعود وإمكانيات هائلة، وأنا على ثقة أنه يستطيع البناء على ذلك من أجل التعافي وإعادة بناء مستقبل أفضل."

وفي معرض تذكيرها بالشراكة المستمرة منذ عقود بين لبنان والأمم المتحدة، جددت السيدة فرونِتسكا التزام المنظمة بدعم لبنان وشعبه وسلامه وأمنه واستقراره وتنميته الاجتماعية والاقتصادية.

وانتهزت الفرصة لتوجيه الشكر لنائبة المنسق الخاص والمنسقة المقيمة للأمم المتحدة نجاة رشدي على قيادتها الدؤوبة لعمل المنظمة في لبنان خلال الأشهر الماضية.
